Mardi Gras Spirit

Along the streets of New Orleans, in the Garden District, beads were hanging from the fences as Mardi Gras decorations. They are probably still up too, knowing that city.

Blue Plate Special

I snapped this shot while we drove into New Orleans last week, thankfully catching a light long enough to allow a photo. I've passed this building a hundred times out of New Orleans when I worked downtown, and never thought twice about it. It turns out that plans are set to turn this old building into an apartment complex, which would be pretty cool. I do like that they plan on keeping the old signs too! NOLA news article on that conversion.

Sometime in the next few days I'll be getting a new lens (50mm f/1.4 USM), so expect some photos based on me playing with that soon. I'm also going to be looking for someone to model for me to play with that lens as a portrait lens, so if any of you are feeling particularly photogenic, let me know.

Secret Garden

This bench sat snugly along a fence in the Garden District of New Orleans. Who knows when it was last used...

After the Festivities

I snapped this shot after Endymion and Bacchus had finished rolling, and it shows you a quick peek of the aftermath of one of these major parades. I was pretty satisfied with my camera through the parade, I had to crank my ISO to 3200, but it handled well.

17th Street Canal, again

These pictures were sent to me from my father a few days ago, and I thought it would be a good addition to our Friday posts. If you go back and look at my makeshift panoramic of the 17th Street Canal, you can see the various landmarks that appear in both sets of images.

These pictures made me laugh though, when he described them to me, I thought he meant that the cloud STARTED 100ft off the ground, not ended! It's pretty crazy to see though... I wanna go play in it.

Louisiana Sunset #2

Today's post is another shot of the sunset in Destrehan, which I managed to include the moon in. Hopefully I'll get some pictures of blacksburg soon. The dull weather has kept me from going out to photograph, so i'm slacking on getting new shots for next week.

Louisiana Sunset

Sunset in my hometown, shot from the roof. I looked up, saw this fantastic sky, and had less than 5 minutes to get the shot. I ran to the roof, took about 40 exposures of various settings, and then went downstairs. By the time I made it back outside, the amazing colors I captured were gone.

I thought this was a good photo to kick off my first regular photo posting. Feel free to by my critics, I can't learn if I don't know I made mistakes. (:

17th Street Canal

This is a quick panoramic of the 17th Street Canal in New Orleans. (shown here). Shot from the 12th floor of an office building, which resulted in reflections from the glass. Combined with the gross weather that day, it's not a very beautiful picture, but it's an iconic location. For those of you that are not familiar, after Hurricane Katrina, everything to the right of this canal was flooded to the rooftops. The repaired levee wall is in the distance, it's the section that changes color along the right wall. More information about the canal and breach can be found on Wikipedia, here.
